Socialising After Bariatric Surgery: Finding Your New Normal

If you’ve ever worried about how bariatric surgery might affect your social life, you’re not alone. Let’s face it: food and drinks are the centrepieces of so many social events and navigating those situations post-surgery can feel tricky.

But here’s the good news, you don’t have to choose between your goals and your social life. You can have both – it just takes a little adjustment and confidence.

Reframing Social Gatherings

I used to feel awkward saying “no” to certain foods or explaining why I wasn’t eating much. But then I realised, the people who love me aren’t there to judge – they just want to enjoy my company. Once I shifted my focus to the people instead of the food, socialising became a whole lot more fun.

  • Focus on Connection: Suggest activities that aren’t food centred, like going for a walk, seeing a movie or trying a new hobby together.
  • Plan Ahead: If you’re attending a food focused event, bring a dish you know works for you. That way, you can enjoy the moment without worrying about what to eat.

Owning Your Journey

One of the best lessons I’ve learnt is that I don’t owe anyone an explanation. If I want to share my journey, I will – but if not, “No, thank you” is a complete sentence.

Socialising might look a little different now, but it doesn’t mean you have to give it up. With a bit of planning and self-confidence, you’ll find your groove and enjoy the best of both worlds and you may actually enjoy socialising more with your newfound confidence.
